Collioure has always been a source of inspiration for artists. Writers, poets, singers and painters fell under Collioure’s charm. That is also why Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy Chagall, Marquet, and many others set up their easels here and immortalized the small Catalan harbor in their works. With approximately thirty galleries and many artists from the entire world, Collioure still is the ”City of Painters.”

The Museum of Modern Art in Collioure was founded by Jean Peské in 1930. In the 1980's the municipality of Collioure acquired and restored Gaston Pam’s property so that exhibitions could be held there. These art works came into possession of the community mainly through donations (by Balbino Giner, Descossy, Perrot, Baloffi, Cocteau, and many others). Since then, the exhibitions of contemporary artists have been promoted by the city of Collioure. Since 1990 the winners of the ”Prix Collioure” who are determined in the ”Germination Europe” have been invited to Collioure. Every two years this prize is awarded to young European artists who are then allowed to work in the museum’s studio for one year. A large exhibition marks the end of the year. When they leave, the artists give one of their creations to the museum.

Fauvisme Path (Le Chemin du Fauvisme)

In 1905 Henri Matisse and André Derain found their way to Collioure. Since 1994 ”Le chemin du Fauvisme” has used the works of these two artists to remind us of the presence of 20 th century art in this small Catalan harbor. On the path you can admire twenty reproductions of Matisse's and Derain's works exactly where these two masters of Fauvism painted the originals earlier this century.

Antonio Machado

The great Spanish poet Antonio Machado, born on July 26 th , 1875, in Seville, was an active republican. On January 22, 1939, he left Barcelona with his family and some friends to escape Franco's dictatorship and chose Collioure as exile. He led a secluded life in ”Casa Quintana” where he died on February 22, 1939, his mother died 3 days later. Machado had become symbolic of exile; his fame has grown constantly in the silence of Collioure, where his remains can still be found under a plain tombstone in the old cemetery. Ince 1977 when the ”Antonio Machado Fundation” honors his memory by inviting entries in an international poetry competition every February. Conferences, lectures, musical castillan dance, exhibits, ceremonies, are also held.

The fundation also created an International Literature Prize awarded every two years, during Antinio Machado’s days.

You can also visit different exhibitions in the ”Château Royal” at the cultural center (Centre Culturel, rue Michelet) and in the old town hall (l’ancienne mairie, place du 18 Juin and galerie du Tenyidor).
